Bluebird & Black Lace

Hello from Australia, where I am currently stationed! 🙂

(TEMPORARILY, I should add [as I often get photographers assuming I have moved permanently whenever I mention being somewhere else, which is, um, often]. I am very much as always living in Oxfordshire in England. Just to clarify. But I am in Oz land at the moment, if only fleetingly, and as completely in love with this place as ever.)

Just updating things in a spare moment, and wanted to show some new photos taken on the winter solstice by J H in Brighton. Although we’ve shot together all over the world, in California, Paris (several times), Venice, Wales, Northumberland and probably lots of other places I can’t remember at this exact moment, we’d never shot in his actual flat, in Brighton, despite him having produced some excellent work there with other models and despite me having posed for him on the beach there and under a bridge as part of a tango duo once (that was fun!).

Anyway, I drove to Brighton and, as well as taking photographs, we made a crucial stop to a tea shop (Bluebird Tea Conpany) J had been raving about and already sent me samples from, and I am already completely hooked on their orange flavoured matcha (just wish it wasn’t so pricey as I seem to go through it quite quickly!). We also went along in the evening to watch the Burning Clocks Parade go by, which finished at the beach. Very cool and fun to see the effort people had put in with making clocks lanterns and, er, fish! I always think we should celebrate the winter solstice as-much-if-not-more-than the summer one. Makes more sense to me!

Anyway, with lots of thanks to J as always for wanting to take photos of me so many times, and always producing different and new images! 🙂

The Year That Was: 2015

I should have done this a while ago, this website/blog integration shebang. Website updates are a bit like haircuts, I find; a change doesn’t occur to you for a long time, you don’t need one, and your tresses are flowing and wild, representing you pretty well, until completely out of the blue you are overcome by the urge to re-jig. As soon as this urge has poked itself into your consciousness, it’s all you can think about and you are unable to wait more than about five minutes. You need to make that appointment. It has to be done within 24 hours max, or you will implode. (OK, I went to the hairdresser and paid an exorbitant amount to cut off a few wispy ends, the paltry total of which could have been collected into a small thimble; still, it somehow made a difference and put a spring in my hair flick.)

ANYWAY… (Sorry… On to the good stuff!)

Better late than never, I am presenting the 2015 version of my yearly review! I love putting these ‘overview’ posts together – it’s quite a tradition now (Click here for 2014 highlightsClick here for 2013 highlightsClick here for 2012 highlights) to look back through everything I’ve done and been lucky to experience over the last year. It’s nice not to have older posts (full of work of which I’m still proud) disappear so deeply into the vast blogosphere, but instead to pick them up, one by one, and examine them, finding old favourites and revisiting moments that have been resting briefly in the near-past.

So, without further ado (and with the knowledge that compiling this list is going to take me a little while to put together; I’ve got a cup of chai and some classic Jill Scott to keep me going: ‘So I shook my head, “What’s up?”
“Hello,” she smiled as she rung me up
Orange juice $3.29, Croissants $4.85
She sniffed, Butter 89
She sniffed, Strawberries $1.50 a pint
She sniffed, and sniffed, and sniffed, and sniffed again
And then replied, “Raheem, right?”‘), I hope you enjoy this long and visual list of reasons I have loved my job this year…

HUGE thanks to those who have been a part of this (full info and links can be found within the original posts), shared their images with me and continue to book me for photographic adventures. I wonder what will end up in next year’s review! 🙂

Christmas Blooms

Manchester yesterday, Brighton tomorrow… I seem to be both speeding up and winding down for Christmas… I’m sure many of you can relate! Here’s a quick update of some slightly Christmassy portraits from Paul Lock, who I had the pleasure of modelling for again recently.

Wishing you all a wonderful time full of love and joy, and only minimal crass and over-electric flashing neon. I’m off to a Christmas carol service with my family tonight in a tiny, tiny village church which was bedecked beautifully this time last year for my older brother’s wonderland wedding. 🙂 Can’t believe how time zooms!

Merry Christmas and I am looking forward to seeing many of you next year, all over the world!

Doors & Chandeliers

You can read all about my recent trip to Brussels in the wake of the terror threat over here on my other blog, which I enjoy updating with various thoughts and pieces of writing now and then (and which you should definitely be following..! :-)), but over here, I thought I’d add some images taken while I was there by Luc Bollen. He took us to the same beautiful house as last time (some previous images here), but this time we used different rooms. I loved shooting there again. I should be able to show you more soon (this is just one set, really), but it’s very kind of him to send me some already.
